Internet Day: October 29

For Internet Day 2018, we wanted to share some interesting facts about the Internet that you may not know:

     1. For starters, the world forever changed when the Internet was first achieved in 1969, when the computer science department at UCLA sent the first message over the Internet connection to the computer lab at Stanford. This had been years in the making, and no one could expect how much power the Internet could hold. In fact, when the message tried to send to the computer in Stanford, both computers crashed.

     2. The very first spam email was sent in 1978.

     3. The first webcam was used in 1991 at Cambridge University to monitor the coffee maker to avoid wasted trips to an empty pot.

     4. The first ever banner ad invaded the Internet in 1994 a part a part of AT&Ts “you will” campaign, and was placed on the HotWired homepage.

     6. As of January 1, 2018, there were 3,812,564,450 internet users spanning the globe. This is compared to the 3.42 billion accounted for users recorded in 2016.

     7. As of January 2018 there were over 1.3 Billion websites on the Internet.

     8. One in six marriages today started with online dating

     9. Google now processes over 6,586,013,574 search queries a day worldwide. 15% of those queries have never been searched for on Google before.

     10. There's really an Internet Hall of Fame.

     11. You could fit the whole Internet on just 200 million Blu-Ray disks.

     

     12. China has treatment camps for Internet addicts.

     13. "Gangnam Style ” by PSY is still the most viewed videos of all time with more than 2,840,000,000 views. (We don't get it, either....)

  

It's unbelievable to think about the progress that the Internet has made since 1969. We can't wait to see what the future holds for the Internet!
